My Lulu
Lulu is the most patient, happy, people loving, dog loving, cat loving, most beautiful Standard Poodle EVER! (I may be bias) This is the way she walked off the plane 3 years ago, when my life was forever changed by the love of a Poodle. For those of you who do not have the pleasure to have a Standard Poodle of your own, I will tell you I have owned many breeds and loved everyone of them but there is something so intuitive, so human like about the way a Standard Poodle looks at you that touches your soul.
Lulu and I had a grooming routine that started from day one. I taught her to lie on her side while I blow dried her hair and in no time she was peacefully snoozing on the table while I brushed and dried her fur. I cannot tell you how bonding her grooming time is for us. It has developed a very strong relationship between us and she respects me and loves our time together. I can whole heartedly tell you she enjoys and even looks forward to the 'Mommy and me time' she receives during our grooming sessions.
I started trying various creative grooming techniques with Lulu. Researching all products making sure they were safe to use on dogs. We started putting little splashes of colour in her hair and have fun with it. Lets face it, she does not know her ears are pink, she knows "WOW! I am getting even more people petting me and talking to me then usual!"
Every product I use is non-toxic, ammonia free and free of any harmful chemicals! Some of the products need to set to get colour, some do not. When it needs to be set I usually put it on (which takes a couple of minutes) , wrap it in some plastic and then do her nails, ears, feet and face (things I would have to do anyway) and by that time it is ready and then the dye just washes out while she is in the tub. Other colour, like the one I used for the NL Pet Expo, takes literally 10 minutes from start to finish and washes out in one or two washes.
Colour on their dog is obviously not for everyone, nor are the creative and funky cuts I choose to have Lulu in... BUT it is in no way effecting her health, safety or well being. I do not expect everyone to like it or want it on their dog and everyone is entitled to their opinion... BUT please have a reason for the opinion you have or else there is just no point of having one in the first place.
I am not cruel for having creative fun with my dog, I am not abusing or harming her. She loves to lie on the bed, ride in the car, come to work with Mom, run in the woods, run in the mud, wade in the pond... she means the world to me.
So please before you open your mouth to make a rude comment or judgement why not ask to be educated about it first.

The Do's and Don't's When Preparing and Dropping Off Your Dog For Grooming
#1. DON'T get off the phone after making your appointment and say "Oh fluffy's going for a bath next week" then say "Poor fluffy!!!" and then pick him up and kiss him with feelings of guilt every day until the day you drop him off. Dogs feel what we feel, if you're anticipating the grooming, so will he!
#2. DO put your dog out before you go to your groomer's. Make sure they have FULLY relieved themselves (that means #1 and #2) before entering the salon. Watch them carefully that morning to make sure they have went... and YES you even have to put them out when it is raining!
#3. DON'T come in with a dripping wet dog and say "I took him for a swim before we came in" or "I already bathed him for you!" Sometimes there are things we need to do with your dog before we bathe them so please do not bathe or take your dog for a swim before bringing them in. We also use high end products and shampoos that help us groom your dog the best we can, even if you bath them, we will do it again and it will NOT cost you less!
#4. DO tell us if your dog has any disabilities or injuries we need to be aware of. (examples: blindness, deafness, cuts, sores, past injuries, past surgery, seizures.) There is nothing worse then trying to communicate with a deaf dog when you have no idea that they are deaf! (Yes! This has happened, more then once!)
#5. DON'T anticipate your dog hating the grooming process the whole drive to the salon. If you are anxious, your dog is anxious.
#6. DO give us a number to reach you in case we need to call you at any point during the grooming process. If you do not have such a number leave us with another contact person.
#7. DON'T stick around after you drop your dog off talking to them through the gate telling them you are sorry for leaving them and you will be back soon.... and oh...can you just hold him one more time before you go? We hate to burst your bubble but most dogs, as soon as you leave... their tail goes up, head held high and they are off to sniff some doggie butt! :) The only reason they are crying or jumping at you is because they think there is something wrong with you, they feed off your energy. If you don't make a deal of it, neither will they! I promise!
#8. DO fully explain what you want done with your dog and be clear. If a picture would help you to show us then find a picture you like or think is cute and bring it with you. We will not always be able to do what is in the photo but we can definitely get a solid idea of what you are going for.
#9. DON'T come back to check on your dog before we call you!!! Phone calls are welcomed but please do not stop in. We run an open concept salon so when you walk in your dog can see, smell and hear you! This can be a recipe for disaster if we are in the middle of cutting around your dogs face with 8.5" shears that are razor sharp! One sudden move that we are not expecting and we could injure your dog. Please for the safety of your beloved pooch, CALL FIRST!
#10. DO always trust at Doggie Stylz your dog is in safe and loving hands. We care about your dog, their safety and well being at all times. You stay calm, we stay calm and guess what?... so will your dog!
YOU have the power to make your dog's grooming experience a pleasant, stress free spaw day!!! Remember it is all in YOUR energy!

What a Start to Spring!
Well here I am lying on my bed with my three dogs studying for my Grooming Certification instead of grooming your dogs. Sometimes Snow Days are fun but when you are as busy as we are right now I need to be at work! I do apologize to everyone who had appointments today but due to road conditions I just didn't want my staff out driving in this mess!
It's been a while since my last post and I promise to try and post more often, ideally daily is my goal.
Lulu and I went to Atlanta and competed in the Worlds largest grooming competition! We had a blast, althought we didn't place we got a wonderful critque and were told we only needed to 'tweak' a few things and we would have placed. We met so many people and conversed and got tips from some of the top industry leaders. I brought back new products and new knowledge to use at the salon.
Lulu and I have also been asked by the National Association of Creative Pet Groomers to write a product review for their next magazine issue. As well as Lulu will be featured in the magazine using the product. We will keep you posted on this.
Doggie Stylz also got to groom it's very first Irish Wolfhound this month! She was a spactacular canine! Her name is Kylie and she was just beautiful and so mild mannered. I just love when we get to experience different breeds.
Grooming is Maintenance NOT a Make Over!
While I enjoy a good 'before and after' transformation, the truth is grooming is meant to be form of coat maintenance not a complete transformation every time.
I am often asked "How long until fluffy needs to be groomed again?" My answer depending on style of coat is usually 4-6 weeks or 6-8 weeks. Some people take my advice and they pre book for my suggested time period. Some pre book for 12 weeks (which is too long) and then some say "Okay I will check my schedule and call you." I usually end up seeing those people 6 months down the road with a severely matted dog.
People sometimes have the mind set that groomers suggest a short period of time between grooming to make more money off them. This however is not true. Most salons are steady all year round so if you don't book in that 4-8 week time period chances are that slot will be filled by someone else anyway. We suggest this because it is what is healthy for your dog's skin and coat. Also it takes less time to groom your dog when he/she is kept on a regular schedule, therefore saving us time and you money. Extra matting and extra hair takes more time to groom and extra charges must apply! When you bring in a dog with 3 months growth we have to 'find' a dog in all that hair and develop a flattering style instead of just maintaining the one we gave you on your last visit.
So next time you leave your Groomer's place why not pre book your next appointment for the suggested time period... think to yourself... would you wait 2 or 3 months between washing your hair? :)
